On Tuesday, President Klaus Iohannis and the representatives of the parliamentary parties signed the political agreement ensuring 2 percent of GDP for the Defense Ministry.

The Romanian President said after the signing ceremony that today we are proving Romanian militaries that we respect them and that we want to improve their work conditions by ensuring the proper financing for training and modern equipment facilities.

Iohannis thanked in his speech all those attending the ceremony for maturely understanding that an agreement on the Army financing is needed.

“The fact that all those present committed to support a minimum level of 2 pc of GDP for Defense by 2017 and to keep this sum for at least ten years is proving Romania’s wish to predict its military expenses,” the head of state pointed out.

At the same time, Iohannis said the army is a security supplier but it can also be a supplier of economic progress, as the facilities programs can generate partnerships between domestic companies and the ones of our allies, as well as foreign investments and jobs for Romanians.

The Romania’s President stated that the pact signed on Tuesday proves that “Romania is a responsible NATO member and understands its responsibilities”.

“When we are waiting solidarity from our allies, in a tough moment for the security of our region, we have to be aware that we need to increase the financial contribution for the Army. The strategic partnership with the USA, along with NATO and EU membership, represent the basic elements of our foreign and security policy. I assure you Romania will behave like a reliable partner,” Iohannis ended his speech.
