The additional excise duty on fuel, with the announcement that the money raised will be used for road infrastructure, was not a good project because the Government could not unlock procedures to effectively invest the money, but helped to ensure a fiscal space, according to Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Asked by Digi 24 if the over-excise was a good or failed decision, Ponta said: “It wasn’t a good project, because we could not unlock procedures and to actually invest the money. Irt helped us however within the fiscal space. In order to start a procedure, you must show that you have money, otherwise the European Commission and the IMF would have clearly said no.”

He assured that this year and next year he will focus “most of the energies” on infrastructure projects.

From April 1, 2014, the additional fuel excise of 7 eurocents per litre was introduced, resulting in an increase of RON 0.41/litre in the price of leaded and unleaded petrol, diesel and oil used as motor fuel (kerosene), stirring protests at the time from the transporters.
