Wolfgang Bosbach, the head of internal affairs committee with the German Bundestag, said Romania is not going to join the Schengen area in 2015, even if Klaus Iohannis was elected Romania’s president, as the political situation is not expected to change fundamentally, Der Spiegel reports.

“High hopes and expectations are connected to Iohannis’s win. But the victory by itself will not fundamentally change the political situation in Romania,” the CDU MP said.

“There are still doubts related to Romania joining the Schengen space. (…) Romania is not going to reach this objective in 2015,” Bosbach said.

The declaration follows Johannis’s statements for Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung that he is going to push for Romania’s joining the Schengen area this year. ‘I would be very happy to see this issue solved,’ Iohannis said.

Germany has been one of the most important opponents to Romania joining the Schengen area, based on the fact that Bucharest hasn’t registered enough progress in fighting corruption and organised crime, Der Spiegel reads.
