Tour of Romania: Dutch cyclist Peter Schulting wins first stage, takes over yellow jersey

Dutch cyclist Peter Schulting (Monkey Town) won on Wednesday the first stage of the 2018 edition of the Tour of Romania, on 154.7 km, on the route Alba Iulia – Vingard – Draşov – Doştat – Păuca – Roşia de Secaş – Blaj – Şeica Mică – Şeica Mare – Slimnic – Ocna Sibiului – Sibiu.

Peter Schulting was timed in 3 h 51 min 34 sec. 2nd place came to Swiss Simon Pellaud (Team Illuminate), 15 seconds behind the winner, and third was Onur Balkan (Turkish national team), 17 seconds behind Schulting.

First among the Romanian cyclists was Emil Dima (MsTina-Focus) on the 8th position, 23 seconds behind Schulting. Sergei Tzvetcov (the national team of Romania) finished the 10th position.

Schulting is the yellow jersey holder, awarded to the leader in the overall standings and of the red jersey, for the best climber.

Around 100 cyclists took off on Wednesday from Alba Iulia in the Tour of Romania, a tour at the 51st edition which has resumed after five years of break. The so-called ‘little loop’ will end on Sunday in Bucharest.

On Thursday, the second stage will take place (162,8 km) on the following route: Sibiu – Bradu – Avrig – Fagaras – Codlea – Ghimbav – Cristian – Rasnov – Poiana Braşov – Brasov.
