Tourists’ overnight stays increased by 9.6 pc in January, INS shows

Both the arrivals and the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation increased by 9.6 percent each, in January 2018, National Institute of Statistics (INS) shows.

Compared to January 2017, in January 2018 customs registered an increase in both the arrivals of foreign visitors of 22.4 percent and in the departures abroad of the Romanian visitors of 13.6 percent.

In January 2018, the arrivals of the Romanian tourists in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 79.4 percent of the total arrivals, while the foreign tourists were 20.6 percent, weights similar to those of January 2017. 

As to the arrivals of the foreign tourists in the establishments of tourists’ reception, the highest weight had those coming from Europe (73.8 percent of the total of foreign tourists) and 80.1 percent of them came from European Union Member States.

In January 2018, the Romanian tourists’ overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 78.1 percent of the total overnight stays, while the foreign tourists’ overnight stays were 21.9 percent. As to the overnight stays of foreign citizens in the establishments of tourists’ reception, the highest weight had those coming from Europe (74.3 percent of the total of foreign tourists) and 75.7 percent of them came from European Union Member States.

In January 2018, the average duration of stay was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2.0 days for foreign tourists. 

By county, the number of tourists’ arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation) recorded, in January 2018, higher values in Bucharest Municipality (128.4 thousands), Brasov (107.0 thousands), Prahova(45.9 thousands) and Cluj (34.9 thousands), while the number of tourists’ overnight stays) recorded higher values in Brasov (233.9 thousands), Bucharest (210.5 thousands), Prahova (98.9 thousands) and Mures (66.7 thousands).  

Most of the foreign visitors accommodated in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation) came from Israel (17.7 thousands), Italy (16.9 thousands), Germany (14.6 thousands), France (9.4 thousands) and Republic of Moldova (9.2 thousands).
