Feldioara, the oldest fortress in Brasov
Feldioara Citadel also known as the Teutonic fortress is the oldest fortification in Barsa Land and it was officially attested in 1225. It is located 21 km north from Brasov on DN 13. It was founded by the Teutonic knights between 1211 and 1225 and transformed into a peasant citadel later on in 1457.
The city has a late medieval style appearance that outlines the specific of the 14th-15th centuries. Currently there are two towers connected to the defensive walls, which can be seen here, unfortunately dilapidated. In the past, the city had walls of stone and brick, very resistant, reinforced, in some places reaching up to 2 meters. However, from the massive construction there were preserved only the North-West tower, the fountain located in the middle, which however is currently covered, the foundation built in stone, but most of the cellar area.
Near the castle you can see a Gothic church, which was built between the 13th and the 15th centuries and which has been preserved very well so far. According to historical writings, between 1211 and 1225 the headquarters of the Teutonic Order in Barsa was located here. The church was built on the foundations of an older basilica that date from early thirteenth century. The settlement has a long history, which began in the Neolithic.
In ruins, the citadel is now rehabilitated by a company specialized in restoring historical monuments. The project cost RON 15 million and it supposed to be completed this year. Feldioara Fortress works began two years ago, but they were performed only 30%, due to lack of funds. Many sectors of the old fortress have been rebuilt, needing more technical interventions for the rehabilitation. The few fragments of the old building walls, best preserved, were largely restored and strengthened.
Once the completion of the consolidation and restoration works are finished, the County Council wants to include the city in a tourist circuit of fortresses and fortified churches in Transylvania.
In the past few years the fortifications in Brasov got investments in the amount of over EUR 15 million from European funds and the profit was simply expected. Last year for example, Rasnov had a profit of RON 2.2 million and Rupea Fortress over half a million.
