Four „blue flag” beaches heralded on the Romanian seaside this summer season

Romania will have four „blue flag” beaches this summer season, Digi24 says. However, the announcement doesn’t precisely say which are these beaches, expected to boost Romanian tourism.

Blue flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education, whose criteria include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag is sought for beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards.

So, it means less overcrowded and cleaner beaches, also providing cutting edge equipment and services.

There are 400 such blue flag beaches worldwide, with Spain ranking first  (560 beaches) and Greece second (480).

Now, in Romania all that relates to the seaside and beaches seems a little bit more complicated. Last year, the Romanian seaside boasted only one blue flag beach in northern resort of Mamaia, while more than ten years ago, in 2006 more precisely, there were five of such beaches and a marina.

However, to maintain such high standard proved to be quite expensive, so, last year, there was only one blue flag beach left on the Romanian Black sea coast.

A blue flag beach must observe 32 criteria, starting from, water quality, safety, toilets and showers up to beach bars and all environmental norms observed.

Tourism experts say that such a beach could boost tourism and can lure 10 percent more tourists as a general basis.

„It will equally weigh a lot also for the Romanian tourists, for many of them have traveled around the world. It is like a guarantee of quality,” tourism consultant Aurelian Marin told Digi 24.
