Romanians traveled more this summer, and Italy, Spain, Germany and Great Britain are among the countries to or from which they flew most often. the tourists’ preference for vacations in September is also interesting: twice as many tourists chose to book their vacations in this month compared to 2023, the main explanation being, of course, the decreasing rates compared to the June-August period.

According to the study published by a local travel platform, the summer of 2024 was marked by a return to normality in the airline industry, with a 17% increase in the number of tickets sold compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019.

The study also shows that August remains the most popular period for vacations, with 39% of study participants opting to go on vacation this month, followed by July with 35% and September with 25%.

At the same time, it seems that most Romanians (27%) booked their flights 2-3 months before departure, as happened in 2023. this trend proves once again that Romanians now trust in stability the airline industry, so they want to ensure better prices and the availability of seats in the aircraft in advance. Reservations a month in advance are equally popular, voted by 26% of the respondents.

Romanians say that their vacation budget was higher, even though their initial intentions were to keep the amount from 2023. More than 43% of respondents say they had a bigger budget this year, while 38% of them say it was similar with the one in the summer of 2023. More than 50% of them claim that the maximum budget for this summer was 700 euros per person. The average price for a passenger was 163 euros in the summer of 2024, as opposed to 169 euros, the rate of last summer. Also, the average fare for checked baggage was 80 euros, for hand luggage, 27 euros, and choosing a seat on the plane cost 25 euros. Last but not least, the average rate for a reservation made in the summer of 2024 was 264 euros, compared to 272 euros, in the summer of 2023.
48% of Romanians had only one vacation this summer, while 25% of them enjoyed two vacations. It is also worth mentioning that they now allocate more time to vacations: 57% of respondents chose extended vacations, compared to 42% in the previous year.
The average length of stay at the destination was approximately 8 days during the summer, but there were also city-breaks of 3-4 days, preferred by 27% of tourists.
Regarding the popular summer destinations, it seems that they remained similar to those of 2023. in the top destinations chosen by Romanians for this summer were Italy, Spain, Great Britain and Germany, which was also the host of the European Championship of Football, which is why it attracted a very large number of tourists. Regarding the cities, London was both last summer and this summer in the first position in the top of the most booked destinations.
The capital of Great Britain was joined by Brussels, Milan and Paris, the city where the Olympic Games took place.
A special mention also deserves Tirana, the Albanian city that started an intense tourist promotion campaign in recent months and which is among the cheapest summer destinations.
