When it comes to travel, Romanians aren’t choosing between world-famous landmarks and secret local spots — they want the best of both worlds. A recent survey by Kiwi.com reveals that Romanian travelers are striking a balance between iconic attractions and authentic, lesser-known experiences. Yet, some subtle differences in travel habits emerge between men and women.

A strong majority — 76% — say they wouldn’t skip major tourist attractions, even if crowded. Men are more likely to visit famous landmarks “just to say they’ve been there” (58% vs. 45% of women), while women tend to be more selective — 66.4% say they’ll only queue for a site that genuinely interests them, compared to 54.4% of men.

To avoid long waits, nearly 80% of travelers report using skip-the-line passes or planning visits during off-peak times.

While big sights remain on the itinerary, there’s growing enthusiasm for local secrets. An overwhelming 86% say they enjoy combining must-see landmarks with off-the-beaten-path experiences. However, Romanian tourists also maintain a dose of realism: 71% believe that many so-called “hidden gems” are already well-known tourist spots.

Despite this, curiosity remains high — over 81% rely on locals for uncovering authentic experiences. Both men and women agree that the most memorable discoveries often come through local insight.

Interestingly, when Romanians do stumble upon a true hidden gem, many prefer to keep it under wraps — 58.6% say they’d rather not share it. Men are a bit more secretive, with 32% strongly agreeing they want to keep such finds private, compared to 22% of women.

From selfies at the Colosseum to quiet cafés tucked away from the crowds, Romanian travelers embrace both iconic destinations and meaningful local connections in their journeys.
