Romanians, in the top ten of the foreign tourists who visited Israel the most this year

A record number of tourists visited Israel in April, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Israel Ministry of Tourism.

374,000 visitors entered the country in April, which is the highest ever figure for any month since 1948, reads a press release by the Israel Embassy in Bucharest.

During January-April 2017, 1.09 million tourists (not counting day visitors) entered Israel, 28 per cent more than in the same period in 2016 and 23 per cent more than in 2015.

Visitors to Israel come from all over the world, with Romanians also joining the top ten of the foreign tourists. The ten countries with the most visitors so far this year are the United States, Russia, France, Germany, the UK, Ukraine, China, Italy, Romania and Poland.

While tourism from all of these countries is on the rise, the most dramatic increase is from China –37,900 Chinese tourists visited Israel in the first four months of 2017, 112% more than during the same period in 2016.

Visitors include tourists who stay in Israel, day visitors, and tourists on a cruise who stop in Israel for a day or two but sleep on the cruise ship. The majority of the tourists come for more than a day and arrive by air. Land crossings account for 40,000 of the April tourist entries (not including day visitors), about 34,000 via Jordan and about 6,000 via Egypt. This is 56% more than was recorded in April 2016 and 22% more than in April 2015.
