The year 2024 has been remarkable for travel and exploration, according to a travel-tech company’s analysis of how Romanians embarked on their journeys and the trends that defined their adventures.

Despite a 15% increase in average plane ticket prices compared to 2023, Romanian travelers maintained an average stay of six days per trip, showcasing their unwavering enthusiasm for travel.

Popular destinations included Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany, Romania, and France, with top cities being London, Milan, Bucharest, Rome, and Paris. In total, Romanians explored an impressive 821 cities across 134 countries this year. The busiest routes were Bucharest to London, Milan, Rome, Paris, and Barcelona.

The most active months for flight bookings were September, June, July, May, and August. These periods reflect peak summer travel and transitional seasons when travelers capitalize on lower prices and reduced crowds.

Romanian travelers increasingly sought far-off destinations in 2024. Notable increases were seen for trips to China (+107.14%), Tunisia (+52.31%), Indonesia (+32.39%), and The Maldives (+23.81%). Closer to home, Moldova and Albania also gained popularity, with booking surges of 253.7% and 161.67%, respectively. Rising cities of interest included Chișinău, Tirana, Bilbao, New York, and Glasgow.

The agency reported 291 million searches—a 109.8% increase from 2023. While Italy, Spain, Germany, and France dominated the search results, emerging destinations like Azerbaijan (+94.51%), Qatar (+79.75%), Cook Islands (+52.16%), and Nepal (+51.35%) saw growing interest. Specific cities such as Fairbanks, Alaska (+754.2%), Salerno, Italy (+503.64%), Enfidha, Tunisia (+428.18%), and Tartu, Estonia (+300.7%) highlighted a shift towards more diverse and unconventional travel choices.

Searches for “Anywhere” destinations and “Anytime” dates reached nearly 14.3 million and 13.2 million, respectively, reflecting an increasing preference for flexible and spontaneous travel.

The most popular time to book flights was Tuesdays at 7 PM, while the cheapest tickets were often secured on Mondays between 8 AM and 4 PM. Early January and weekdays consistently proved to be cost-effective for booking flights.

One Romanian traveler grabbed the cheapest flight of the year—a €4 journey from Cluj-Napoca to Milan, booked 43 days ahead. Another set a record for the longest journey, covering 43,435 km across multiple countries in a month-long itinerary.

Altogether, Romanians collectively traveled over half a billion kilometers worldwide in 2024, embodying an enduring passion for exploration and adventure.
