Study: 4 out of 10 Romanians traveled outside the country in the last 12 months

In the last year, most Romanians traveled more in Romania than abroad, according to the data provided by MKOR & AVIS through the Travel Habits of Romanians 2023 study.

Thus, 91% of the respondents to the mentioned study traveled within Romania in the last 12 months. On average, the number of internal trips is 6 trips. The number of those who chose another country as their destination is smaller, only 4 out of 10 respondents moving outside the country in the last year. Similarly, the frequency of trips is also reduced, recording an average of 2.4 trips.

As for the purpose of the trips, it differs depending on the destination. Foreign countries are generally preferred for leisure. 7 out of 10 respondents went on holiday on their most recent trip abroad. On the other hand, almost 4 out of 10 respondents traveled for business purposes during their most recent trip to the country.

For more than half of the trips, regardless of destination, the average trip duration was one week. When it comes to travel planning, most respondents (43%) take a pragmatic approach when travelling. They set well-defined goals and travel with limited time and budget. At the opposite pole are those who are looking for an easy experience. Thus, 12% of respondents prefer to look for offers for complete stays than to organize the trip personally, in detail. For 1 in 5 respondents, experience is important, they are more interested in exploring new cultures. Experience is also a deciding factor for those looking for premium experiences to make their trip memorable (9%).
