Exotic destinations like the UAE and Turkey are gaining traction among Romanians this year, yet affordable luxury and proximity are also drawing attention. Switzerland emerges as a favored city-break destination for Romanians, as indicated by data from a tech-travel firm.

According to data from this platform, bookings to Switzerland made by Romanians increased by 27.5% compared to last year, while the number of travelers surged even more, by 37%. The heightened interest can be attributed in part to declining prices—on average, tickets cost 12% less than last year, with an average of 112 euros for round-trips.

Basel ranks as the most popular Swiss city, followed by Geneva and Zurich. Most Romanians are traveling to Switzerland from Bucharest, closely followed by Iași and Cluj-Napoca. Additionally, Romanians are booking trips to the Alpine country from other countries such as Hungary, the UK, Moldova, and France. Moreover, data reveals that Romanians rank as the third most frequent nationality visiting Switzerland worldwide.

Switzerland emerges as an ideal city-break destination for many Romanians, with 77% opting for stays of up to 3 days, while 13% extend their visits to 4 to 6 days, and 8% indulge in longer stays of 7 to 10 days, averaging a 4-day duration.

In terms of booking patterns, 1 in 5 Romanians prefer last-minute bookings, securing tickets up to 3 days before departure, while a quarter plan ahead, booking 21 to 60 days beforehand. Another 20% opt for mid-range planning, securing tickets 7 to 13 days in advance.

For the current year, March stands out as the most popular month for Romanian bookings to Switzerland. Looking at 2023, the data reveals that December, July, November, and September were the peak months for bookings.
