The epic spot in Orastie Mountains where ten hectares of snowdrops dawn in early March
A place in the heart of Orastie Mountains in Hunedoara county, western Romania, turns into an epic sanctuary of…snowdrops every spring from early March to April 5.
The wonderful spot is located on the Vartoapelor Plateau, 13 km away from Sarmizegetusa Regia (the former capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of Dacia province) in Orastie Mountains, Sureanu Massif. The plateau’s clearing thus becomes one of the most beautiful wonderful places in western Romania during spring, with ten hectares of snowdrops offering a fairylike landscape, flooded in white and green.
The onset to the clearing is Orastioara de Sus commune in the natural park of Gradistea Muncelului where ten hectares of snowdrops are suddenly emerging in early March.
The snowdrops stretching on hectares beyond the eye’s glimpse are also very special. The Latin name of this snowdrop species is Leucojum vernum, but locals just call the ‘rich snowdrops’.
