‘The Veteran of the Carpathians’ watches over the pastures of Mercheasa village, 70 kilometers near Brasov county.

It is supposed to be the oldest oak in Romania, being estimated with a large approximation to 900 years, having a circumference of 9.20 m, respectively a diameter of 2.93 m and a height of 21 m.  This oak is filled with history and has many stories to tell about the Teutonic Knights, Transylvanian Saxons, the Romanians who settled here and the Hungarians who still live in the village. ‘The Veteran of the Carpathians’ is the only one that stood up over the years.

In 2009, The Foundation for Partnership of Miercurea Ciuc put the oak on the list of the most spectacular trees in the country.  ‘The oldest tree in Romania’ won the competition against 27 competitors. We can tell how old it is by the thickness of the trunk. It takes 9 people to surround it.

The oak is the greatest treasure of the village; therefore The Forest District fenced in to protect it from animals that graze in the area.
