Turda Salt Mine extends up to 10,000 meters
Salina Turda/Turda Salt Mine is expanding, with a new mine of 10 thousand meters about to open its doors to tourists. Iosif Mine will have 5 panoramic elevators, an artificial river, and several suspended walkways. With the investments of over 25 million euros, the number of tourists would also double, local authorities estimate.
Iosif Mine, also known as the Hall of Echoes, was the main source of salt in the area for 150 years. “At the moment it can only be visited from the level of the balcony. The Iosif Mine is a bell-shaped mine, it was mined in 1740 and has a total depth of 115 meters”, says Mădălina Craiu, guide at Salina Turda.
The expansion work should start next year and last 2 years, local authorities say. “It will cover approximately 10,000 square meters, the financing estimates are somewhere around 25.5 million euros. The new salt pan, in practical terms, will lead to a doubling of the number of visitors, reaching somewhere, according to our estimates, to 1 ,2 million – 1.5 million tourists annually”, says Cristian Matei, the mayor of Turda.

Marvellous place! went on a boat ride and dropped my iPhone in the salty water. A gift to the archaeologist of the future. Maybe it still works.
