Romania will set a participation record this year at Wimbledon, with 8 tennis players competing on the main draw board.

Besides Simona Halep (1st WTA), Mihaela Buzarnescu, Irina Begu, Sorna Cirstea, Monica Niculescu and Ana Bogdan, two other players have qualified to the main draw: Gabriela Ruse and Alexandra Dulgheru, who have passed the last round of qualifications.

Gabriela Ruse (197th WTA) has defeated Barbara Haas (Austria, 215th WTA) 6-0, 7-5 and Alexandra Dulgheru (126th WTA) has defeated Tamara Zidansek (Slovenia, 96th WTA) 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

In the men’s competition, only Marius Copil will compete at Wimbledon.

The draw on Friday shows that Simona Halep, the main favourite, will face Kurumi Nara (Japan. 26, 101st WTA). Simona Halep and Kurumi Nara met so far only once, in 2014, in the second round of the Indian Wells tournament. The Romanian tennis player won in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Halep then reached the semi-finals, and she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwanska.
