The Control Body of the Interior Ministry (MAI) started checks at the Police Academy “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”, probing into suspicions of sexual harassment, with the academy’s rector Daniel Costel Torje being targeted.
The check comes after a student would have accused the rector of sexual harassment during the session in the summer of 2017, according to incisivdeprahova.ro.
“At present, the MAI control body is conducting several punctual checks at the Police Academy <Alexandru Ioan Cuza>, with one them targeting the academy’s rector,” reads a MAI statement.
On Friday evening, rector Daniel Torje announced he resigns and places himself at the disposal of the responsibile bodies, arguing the sexual harassment accusations against him are fake.
“Out of respect for my colleagues (…) I will resign from the position of rector of the Police Academy. At the same time, I place myself at the disposal of the responsible bodies so that they could establish of my statements are true. I will file my resignatiom in the first sitting of the university senate (…) What has been released in the media are fabrications and filth without a name. It’s a made up story. I absolutely deny my involvement in such a scandal, which is actually eyeing my resignation. From my position, I cannot come out publicly to present all evidence showing that I have been prevented from exerting my position of rector and all the pressures put on me to give up this position. I don’t want to be part of this <national war>. I am a simple state clerk who is trying to carry out his office duties, with meticulousness and rigor. I love the institution which I have been serving for over 25 years. I cannot accept that its name should be dragged in all kind of scandals on topics that have nothing to do with the reality,” Torje told Mediafax.
