Nine people have died following the fall of a van, with ten people on board, into the Bistrita River’s canal, in the Viisoara neighbourhood, Neamt County, with only one survivor.
The only survivor of the accident is a 22-year-old from Podoleni, who was on the front seat on the right and who has managed to get out of the van, ziare.com reports.
The Red Plan of Intervention was activated, and more than 35 fire-fighters, three SMURD ambulances and three cars of the County Ambulance Service intervened at the site.
Initially, 7 deaths were reported, and two persons were missing.
10 people were in the van, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU).
Survivors shocked when finding out all the others are dead
The only survivor, Ionut Virlan, 25, got out of the van with his last strengths. When he found out he was the only one who survived, he exclaimed: “They’re all dead? All of them?”
Virlan said he was asleep when the accident occurred.
“I don’t know what happened, I woke up in the water, the windshield was broken. We were ten in the van. My brother in law was also in the van, he was 25. He was the driver. My brother, Stefan, 26, was also in. We were returning from work, we worked as day labourers, planting trees. We’ve worked for about three weeks at Alba Iulia, Arad. We were together with some guys from Iasi, I don’t know their names. One of them was 19, the other one 17. Fanica, from Bargaoani, was 60. I don’t know the name of the company, they brought the documents to be signed and took us to various sites. We were due to go someplace else after the Easter,” Virlan said, according to antena3.ro.
Representatives of the Neamţ County Police Inspectorate (IPJ) declared on Thursday that one of the causes of the accident could be the explosion of a tire.
“Following the first investigations, it appears that an explosion of a tire or other technical problems led to the accident. The vehicle was driven by a 25-year-old youngster from the town of Savinesti,” IPJ Neamţ spokesperson Elena Bulgarea said.
According to her, the private van was transporting forest workers from Transylvania to Neamt County, the workers heading home for the Easter Holidays.
“The van was transporting forest workers aged between 17 to 45 years, who worked near Arad and were on the way home, to Savinesti, to spend the Easter together with their families. The van was not adapted for passenger transport, it as a van for freight transport with some benches and was registered by a natural person,” Elena Bulgarea said, according to antena3.ro.
According to the Neamt Territorial Labour Inspectorate, none of the victims was employed with labour contract by a company.
