A new territorial vision for the United States of America
By Tiberiu Dianu
With the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States, the country is defining its new territorial vision, already outlined during the 45th term of the President.

In his first inaugural address, on January 20, 2025, President Trump declared: “America’s Golden Age begins right now!” and “In America, the impossible is what we do best.”
A bold territorial vision must be outlined and applied: (1) in the Western Hemisphere, (2) in the world, and (3) in outer space.
-(1) In the Western Hemisphere, the US evolved as a state by adding a series of territories to the original 13 colonies through wars or acquisitions. The Monroe Doctrine (1823) outlined the country’s dominant influence in the Western Hemisphere. Furthermore, President Trump has also decreed the change or return to some geographical names, such as the Gulf of America (instead of the Gulf of Mexico) and Mount McKinley in Alaska (instead of Denali).

-(2) In the world, due to the latest challenges on the national security front from other international actors (Russia, China), the US has had to refine its territorial vision by expanding its influence in the Panama Canal, Greenland and Canada. Ridiculed by many, some of these initiatives of President Trump have already appeared during his first term (2016-2020).

In his inaugural address on January 20, 2025, he resumed this idea by promising to “plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars”.
For those who are skeptical of this new vision, I refer to those like them from the formative years of the American state, who did not believe in American exceptionalism, a defining trait of this nation, and who remained few, anonymous, and unimportant in history.
