Wizz Air base in Cluj-Napoca welcomes the 7th aircraft, launches first flight to Lyon

Wizz Air is celebrating the seventh Airbus A320 aircraft that joins its base in Cluj-Napoca, as well as the launch of a new route to Lyon, France.

The newly allocated Airbus A320 is the fourth aircraft to be deployed at Wizz Air’s Romanian bases this year (earlier this year new aircraft joined WIZZ bases at Bucharest, Sibiu and Iasi). This rapid expansion of Wizz Air’s operations brings an 11% growth year on year with almost 9 million seats on sale this year only.

With the fifth new Cluj-Napoca route this year, WIZZ now offers 35 routes from Cluj-Napoca to Europe and beyond, while the entire Romanian network is represented by 139 low-fare WIZZ routes to 20 countries from its ten Romanian airports, providing affordable access for all types of travellers across Europe. Starting from today, 20th November, two weekly flights are available to WIZZ customers to visit Lyon.

The newest destination, Lyon is a mixture of culture, gastronomy and the romantic atmosphere of France. The third biggest city in the country offers so much activity you might want to stay for week! Find the original authentic bouchons where you can enjoy the great Lyonnais food specialities, be amazed by the finest of the French architecture or take a relaxing walk at the banks of Rhône or Saône Rivers. The popularity of this route is underlined by demand – the very first WIZZ flight to Lyon departed from Cluj-Napoca with 120 passengers on board.

The flight to Lyon is operational from Cluj-Napoca as of today, November 10 and there will be flights every Tuesday and Saturday, with prices starting from RON 109, one-way, including taxes and non-optional charges.

Wizz Air’s first Cluj-Napoca flight took off in 2007 and since then, the airline has become the leading carrier at Avram Iancu International Airport. In the first ten months of 2018, WIZZ carried more, than 7 million passengers on its low fare routes to and from Romania, which represents 13% growth year over year. Throughout the country, Wizz Air’s operations this year will support more than 5000 jobs in associated industries.

We are delighted to celebrate yet another important milestone at Avram Iancu International Airport. As we increase our presence in Romania, we create more jobs with Wizz Air as well as offer more and more destinations that can be reached from Cluj-Napoca on Wizz Air’s low fares. Our newest route from Cluj-Napoca now connects the city with astonishing Lyon in France, a perfect destination for a weekend break or even a longer trip! Lyon is an ideal opportunity for our customers to enjoy spectacular culture in a historical city, memorable authentic cuisine and relaxing atmosphere. We are confident that our Romanian customers will enjoy visiting this popular destination as well as Cluj-Napoca will get even more international exposure with tourists visiting the region.  We thank Avram Iancu International Airport for our fruitful cooperation and look forward to welcoming many passengers on board our now already seven modern WIZZ aircraft based in Cluj,” said Tamara Vallois, Wizz Air Head of Communications.
