Romania’s electricity exports, up by almost 60 pc at end-July

Romania is a net exporter of electric energy. According to Energy Minister Toma Petcu, in the first seven months, country’s electricity exports registered an increase of 60 percent, in year-on-year comparison, ”which means so clear that Romania is certainly producing more than it consumes.”

”During this period, indeed we had some problems with weather conditions. Amid a drought quite strong, we had smaller reserves in the lakes and we produced less on the hydro segment, but we had the coal reserve,” Petcu explained.

As regards, the liberalization of the electricity market, Toma Petcu admits that there is no interest of the population in changing the supplier, although this could bring lower bills.

The Minister of Energy also spoke about the situation of the approximately 30,000 households in Romania located in hard-to-reach areas not connected to the electricity distribution network. According to him, it could be find a solution for them by acquiring photovoltaic panels through social programmes.
