Two airports in Romania are in the top 10 of Europe’s top growing airport hubs for Freight & Mail that have experienced the largest amount of growth from the latest data (2018) since 2008, namely 10 year% growth, says data from official EU air-freight figures.
Across Central and Eastern Europe, significant growth is particularly visible across the 10-year period, with airports in Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia all appearing among the top 10.
Avram Iancu Airport in Cluj-Napoca has seen a 621% increase over 10 years of freight & mail tonnes transported, ranking no.4 for % increase over 10 years in Europe.
Traian Vuia Airport in Timisoara is boasting a 497% increase over 10 years of freight & mail tonnes transported, ranking no.5 for % increase over 10 years in Europe.
Showing the growth in economic potential in the Balkan region, Bargas airport in Bulgaria ranks 3rd in Europe for 10-year growth, with a 699% increase in freight tonnes per annum.
Completing the top 5, the European airports that have seen the largest 10-year growth of freight tonnes processed are Zaragoza airport (843% increase) and Valladolid airport (837% increase) in Spain. Spain has six out of the twenty fastest growing freight handling airports in Europe, as measured over the last 10 years – more than any other country.
The UK is far from leading the charge in freight processing growth – East Midlands remains the second biggest cargo airport in the country behind Heathrow.
Norway also emerges as a recent hub for growth, with three airports among the top 10 for year-on-year growth to 2018.
The research has been conducted by CP Cases looking into data from the European Commission between 2008 and the latest annual data in 2018 for emerging European freight markets.
