Hungarian anti-EU, anti-Ukraine speeches at Baile Tusnad

Bence Tuzson, Secretary of State in Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Cabinet and future Minister of Justice, declared, at Băile Tușnad/Balvanyos Summer University in Romania, that “the EU will fall apart if Brussels tries to dictate in the field of legislation, because the process will result in member states not respecting EU decisions”, according to hirado.hu.

The Hungarian politician also explained that “the EU wants to impose its will on national states by means of hidden legislation, by weakening legal concepts and claiming respect for principles of the rule of law that cannot be defined, it wants to impose European legislation against national legislation by judicial means”.

During the discussion at the Summer University, Bence Tuzson cited the Istanbul Convention on Violence Against Women as an example of hidden legislation, explaining that the EU has already become a party to the convention, although there is no full agreement between member states on the details.

Tuzson also added that the diversity of the EU should be preserved and that no member state should be forced to apply the same legal solutions as other countries, but instead common points should be sought. “For this we need a set of objective criteria that suits everyone. If the EU will not function in this way, it will fall apart”, he added.

Hungarian DefMin refuses to talk to Romanian journalists

The Hungarian Minister of Defense refused, on Friday, to speak to the media from Bucharest, after participating in the debates at Băile Tușnad. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczk participated, on Friday, at the Summer University of Băile Tușnad in a debate about the future of NATO.

Peace requires strength! After the NATO Summit” was the topic of the discussions attended by the Hungarian Minister of Defense. At the end of the debates, after giving interviews to the Hungarian press, the minister refused to answer the questions of the Romanian press.

Asked to stop for a few minutes to discuss Hungary’s position in relation to the war in Ukraine, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczk asked his advisor if “should  he?”. The councilors’ answer was “no“, at which point the Hungarian Minister of Defense, in a gesture of defiance towards the Bucharest press, left saying he had other work to do.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczk is one of the ministers from Budapest who came together with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the Summer University of Băile Tușnad. Hungary’s position in relation to the war in Ukraine is the central theme of the debates that take place until Saturday and which will be closed with the famous speech of the Hungarian prime minister. Officials in Budapest are campaigning to end military aid to Kyiv, arguing that this is the path to peace in Ukraine.

At the same time, Katalin Szili, senior advisor to the Hungarian Prime Minister, stated that the situation of the national minorities in Ukraine, including that of the Hungarian minority in Subcarpathian Ukraine, is “on a huge slope”, although the war does not give Ukraine the right to restrict rights and does not exempt it from meeting the accession requirements established by the European Union for candidate countries, reports Hirado.hu.

Katalin Szili drew attention to the reduction of the rights of national minorities in terms of linguistic, cultural and educational rights, a process that began in 2017, when Ukraine became a candidate for EU membership. She emphasized that the law on minorities in Ukraine, adopted in December 2022, imposes an obligation of direct assimilation of persons belonging to national minorities. “Obviously, this is not just a step back, compared to the situation before 2017, but a process: as Ukraine gets closer to the EU, in parallel, it diminishes the rights of national minorities,” said the main adviser to the Hungarian prime minister.

Hungarian PM, Viktor Orban is also expected to talk to the Summer University in Baile Tusnad on Saturday, like he does every year.

In a photo that he posted on his official Facebook page two days ago, Viktor Orban is shown removing water from one of the tents installed in the area where the Summer University is held, using a broomstick. The message posted on the photo is “Vihar állenti vihar”, in translation “Storm before the storm”.
Intervention of the Gendarmerie requested for Viktor Orban’s speech
The President of the Harghita County Council, Borboly Csaba, requests the intervention of law enforcement at Băile Tuşnad, after several Romanian organizations have announced that they will be present, on Saturday, at the speech that will be given by the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban.
In a press release, Borboly claims that, according to information circulating in the online environment, “a group of extremist activists, who are related to Mihai Tîrnoveanu”, are preparing to attend the Summer University in Băile Tuşnad on Saturday. Borboly addressed a letter to the Ministry of the Interior, in which he requested that the law enforcement agencies intervene.
The representatives of the Romanian organizations who announced that they will come, together with several people, to Băile Tuşnad, to attend Viktor Orban’s speech, are the same ones who organized the placement of the 150 crosses for Romanian heroes, in the Valea Uzului cemetery, after the former concrete crosses had been removed, following a court decision.

Borboly says that the law must be above all and state bodies must intervene to stop these people. For the first time, the organizers of Tusvanyos University announced that only those who register on the event’s website can attend Viktor Orban’s speech, in previous editions participation was free.

The President of the Foreign Policy Commission of the Hungarian Parliament, Nemeth Zsolt, urged, on Wednesday, the participants of the Tusvanyos Summer University not to follow the challenges if they will have uninvited guests.

Due to a Hungarian high-level official presence in Baile Tusnad, Romania has provided tight security and protection services.

Besides PM Viktor Orban, other member of his Cabinet , like the Minister of Defence, the Minister of Justice, Energy, Agriculture, are also attending. Moreover, there are a lot of officials from Budapest, which is why the security measures are quite serious. According to mass media, there were deployed forces from the Protection and Guard Service (SPP), cars from the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), which provide protection to foreign dignitaries who are on a visit to our country. The Gendarmerie is present alongside the Police, as well.
