Lower Chamber’s legal committee rejects bill on amnesty and pardon

The Legal Committee of the Chamber of Deputies has unanimously rejected the draft bill on amnesty and pardon on Tuesday. The lower chamber of the Parliament is convened in an extraordinary session during August 26-28.

PSD and ALDE has decided last week in their coalition sitting to reject the draft law on amnesty and pardon.

Rejected by the Legal Committee, the draft is to reach the plenary sitting of the Chamber of Deputies. The draft law has been tacitly adopted by the Senate, the Parliament’s upper chamber, on May 29, 2018

The draft law on amnesty and pardon says that “citizens who were sentenced to prison by final rulings for various crimes cannot be elected in the central and local administration, in Parliament and as Romania’s President“.

Another amendment refers to the Romanian President’s ban to pardon corruption deeds. In the current form of the law, it was just mentioned that the President is granting individual pardon.
