European top leaders, presidents and prime ministers are expected at the EU Summit in Sibiu, Romania on May 8-9 to talk about the Union’s future.
Considering the importance of the event, representatives of the most important world media institutions will be also present to cover the summit, dubbed as one of the most important events on the European affairs this year.
Hundreds of journalists are expected in Sibiu from the national news agencies and the most prestigious foreign media such as Bloomberg, Le Monde, Wall Street Journal, Politico, The Economist, Reuters, Associated Press (AP), Austrian news agency APA, Germany-based DPA, or the Spanish news agency EFE.
Belgian mass media from Brussels will be represented by De Standard, Le Soir, VRT TV. Journalists from Politico, Le Monde, Wall Street Journal and The Economist, will be also present.
Special security measures
Exceptional security measures have been taken for the Summit in Sibiu, with a video system to monitor routes, official motorcades and the accommodation venues being installed.
The delegations attending the summit will use a special corridor made of plastic guard rails, set up last night to demarcate the traffic lanes. The corridor is in place from the airport in Sibiu to downtown. It will be functional on May 9, from 06:00hr to 20:00hr.
The informal summit of the EU heads of state and of the government is taking place as Romania is holding the Presidency of the EU Council. The European leaders gathered in Sibiu will tackle the political agenda of the Union for 2019-2024.
The summit will be hosted by President Klaus Iohannis and the European Council president Donald Tusk will chair the meeting. Among the high-ranking officials attending there will be the president of the Euorpean Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, French President, Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italy’s premier Giuseppe Conte, Hungary’s PM Viktor Orbán, Greece’s PM Alexis Tsipras, Dutch PM Mark Rutte, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki, Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz or Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov.
