Adina Pintilie’s ‘Touch Me Not’ presented at MoMA

After an impressive world tour across the big film festivals worldwide and an intense series of releases in the European theaters, the winner of the Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival, the innovative movie directed by Romanian female director Adina Pintilie, TOUCH ME NOT, will hit the theaters in the United States on January 11, 2019 at the prestigious MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

TOUCH ME NOT is a film-research about intimacy, which questions our preconceived ideas about it. A film on how human beings can touch each other in the most unexpected ways.

Tell me how you loved me, so I understand how to love.’ Together, a filmmaker and her characters venture into a personal research project about intimacy. On the fluid border between reality and fiction, Touch Me Not follows the emotional journeys of Laura, Tómas, and Christian, offering a deeply empathic insight into their lives. Craving for intimacy yet also deeply afraid of it, they work to overcome old patterns, defense mechanisms, and taboos, to cut the cord and finally be free. Touch Me Not looks at how we can find intimacy in the most unexpected ways, at how to love another without losing ourselves,” reads the Berlin Film Festival program.

“Radically humane… an unclassifiable film… a bold treatise about the strange (and often estranged) relationship humans have with their own bodies.“

KINO ZEIT – Beatrice Behn (DE)

“Touch Me Not is not just a movie. It is an experience. So intimate and so profound… a self-discovery trip.”

CRITERION CAST – Joshua Brunsting (US)

“One of 2018’s great discoveries. It’s films like this that make cinema the boundary-pushing medium it has become.”

MIHAI CHIRILOV – artistic director Transilvania International Film Festival (RO)

“A unique and essential film in the Romanian cinema landscape.

A courageous film, without safety net, touched by an extraordinary sense of innocence and purity. By watching it, we get to look at ourselves.”

DMOVIES – Victor Fraga

“A film that will touch you. It will also embrace you, caress you, stroke you, hit you in the face and make you scream with joy and anger.”

CINEUROPA – Stefan Dobroiu (European)

A demanding, thought-provoking, relevant exploration of intimacy and the idea of self, the challenging TOUCH ME NOT breaks new ground by blurring the border between reality and fiction.

SPIEGEL ONLINE – Andreas Borcholte (DE)

Idiosyncratic and substantially courageous cinema which touches you in the best sense.

SIGHT & SOUND – Paul O’Callaghan (UK)

“A brave experiment… This well-intentioned, restlessly inquisitive celebration of female and minority sexuality should strike a chord most readily with those who’ve struggled to understand and express their own identity.”
