Record-breaking event in Alba Iulia: huge Martisor string to embrace the Alba Caroline fortress

A huge white-red string with hanging tassel is surrounding the Alba Carolina Fortress in Alba Iulia on Wednesday, March 1, with locals and visitors being invited to interweave it. Besides honouring the Martisor celebration marking the spring arrival, the event is held to warn over the need of supporting children in need in foster homes.

Organizers say it is the longest Martisor string that has ever encircled a fortress.

80 children from several foster homes in Alba and Mures counties will attend the event, with the county locals and visitors invited to join the humanitarian initiative.

The Alba Iulia city hall is financially and logistically supporting the event, scheduled on Wednesday at 15:00hrs.

“The idea of the youth to encircle the Fortress with probably the longest Martisor string ever seen is not just a symbol of leaving winter, but also a perfect occasion to get together again, to prove our solidarity for the Fortress and the city, and especially for children,” said the city mayor Mircea Hava.

The record-breaking event is followed by a theatre play performed by Skepsis troupe and by a hot meal granted to the little ones.
