A group of Romanian Roma thieves – which developed a successful ‘family business’ at the Eiffel Tower – is currently under investigation in France. The police learned with amazement that members were earning EUR 4,000 per day from the so-called business located at the foot of the most famous building in Paris.

The gang members were acting both at the Eiffel Tower and at the Palace of Versailles for a long time, ‘Le Figaro’ reports.

The group was divided into teams of 3 or 4 people who got lost in the crowd. Dressed sport, wearing a backpack and a cap, they even paid ticket to climb the Eiffel Tower.

The mode of action was simple: they diverted the attention of the victim, as one of them she opened her/his backpack or checked the pockets. A third grabbed the booty and quickly disappeared.

Extremely effective, the system targeted especially Asian tourists, who are known to have large amounts of cash on them. During the season, each gang member could make EUR 4,000 per day.

The gang members lived in a hotel and travelled by taxi. In 2014 gang members paid a bill of EUR 100,000 to the hotel. Much of the gains went to Romania for real estate investments. French police work on this investigation together with the Romanian embassy and Romanian officers sent to France for catching such criminals. The investigation is begun in September last year.
