Health Ministry confirms third case of infection with Zika virus in Romania

The Health Ministry has confirmed a third case of infection with Zika virus in Romania. On July 27 the ministry received the confirmation of an infection of a Romanian citizen travelling abroad.

The infection has been confirmed for a man from Cluj Napoca, 36, who had travelled to Dominican Republic during July 6-13 and to the US during July 13-20. He returned to Romania on July 21. One day later, he came to the Cluj Napoca Infectious Disease Hospital having fever and skin rash.

On July 25, samples from the patient were sent for tests at the Cantacuzino Institute, and on July 27 the results have proved the existence of Zika virus. The man is out of danger and observes the recommendations made by doctors and by the Public Health Department (DSP) Cluj.

The first infection with Zika virus in Romania was reported on July 12, a young woman who came back from Martinique. On July 19, the Health Ministry confirmed the second case of infection with the Zika virus of a Romanian citizen from abroad – a ten-year boy living in French Guyana. He came to Romania on a visit on July 12.
