Three in ten parents in Romania think that punishing children is useful, 11% are instantly slapping their child and 54% are frequently raising voice at kids, reads the latest UNICEF study.

Violence on children is complex, concerning issue and we need long-term interventions. We know that most of the violent acts occur behind closed doors. There are numerous abuse cases on children in our country. Only in the first nine months of 2016 over 10,000 cases of violence have been reported, but we all know that behind every reported case, there are further more unreported violence cases,” said Despina Andrei, communication manager UNICEF.

According to the UNICEF Romania statistics, 11% parents are slapping their children, while 16% believe that ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’.

The same report shows that three in ten parents use various corrections as educational method, and over half of them (54%) would raise their voice at the little ones.

Sandie Blanchet, the UNICEF ambassador in Romania says in her turn that every year there are about 13,000 physical and emotional abuse cases or neglect and exploitation cases in Romania, while several violence forms are still perceived as normal attitude. She also pointed out that there are 300,000 out schools in Romania, and two in ten children are not graduating the 8th grade.

UNICEF and the Romanian Football Federation have signed a protocol on Friday to start several campaigns against violence on children for the next three years.
