Sibiu Salami, Romanian Culinary Icon with EU Protection, Expands to the U.S. Market

Book about the Sibiu Salami released.

Sibiu Salami, the first Romanian meat product to obtain Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Union, boasting a tradition of over 130 years, remains a favorite among Romanians and Europeans. It now holds the potential to make its way into the U.S. market this year. Despite a pandemic-related setback in the HoReCa sector, the consumption of Sibiu Salami has increased to 3,000 tons per year, up from 1,700 tons five years ago. The product’s successful expansion is attributed to both branding and private labeling efforts in the retail sector.

This culinary treasure, which received PGI status in 2016 and has a national day on November 1, has been promoted in Romania, Spain, and Italy over three years (2018-2020) with the help of a €1.5 million European grant obtained by the association. Presently, two of the six companies that formed the association are in advanced stages of introducing this product to the U.S.

Sibiu Salami primarily reaches countries with Romanian communities, including Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The history of this iconic Romanian salami dates back over 130 years. Salami, as a culinary product, has deep historical roots and has evolved into various local variations in Italian and other regions over the centuries.
