Gov’t to approve emergency ordinance in order to pay TVR’s EUR 15m debts to EBU

The current legislation will be amended by Emergency Ordinance, probably on Wednesday, so the TVR debt to European Broadcasting Union (EBU), accumulated during 2008-2016, amounting to CHF17 million (EUR 15 million) to be considered as ‘public debt’ and be paid from the state budget.

“The law will be amended by emergency ordinance, most likely in the next Government sitting, so that the legal framework allows the TVR debt to EBU to be considered as public debt. This will enable the Executive to pay the amount from the state budget and not be considered state aid,” official sources said.

The Finance Ministry confirmed on Tuesday the amount will be paid after the issuing of the emergency ordinance. “The decision to amend the legal framework for the payment will not have an impact on the budgetary deficit, the amount being included in the approved budget,” a release reads.

If ousted from EBU, TVR would have been placed in the impossible position to broadcast the Rio Olympics this year.

The Romanian Society for Radio and Television broadcast is member of EBU since 1993.
