Romanian President Klaus Ioahnnis has stated in Brussels on Friday that he is not that pessimistic about the relation with the United States of America, as Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council is, saying he has lobbied for the reinforcement of the transatlantic relation.
„We are not so pessimistic like Mr. Tusk. I don’t know why he is so pessimistic. I also voiced my stance clearly yesterday, and I was not the only one, for the reinforcement of the transatlantic relation. Stoltenberg also underlined that it is not a singular thread, a relation have several threads, some are weakened, others are strengthened. For instance, the funds allotted from the USA for the armed forces in Europe have increased by 40%. The security relation is continuously enhanced,” President Iohannis stated in Brussels.
Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, said on Wednesday that the policies of President Trump had put trans-Atlantic relations “under tremendous pressure” and that Europeans should prepare the worst-case scenarios.
Amid trade dispute between United States and the European Union, with the retaliation for American tariffs on steel and aluminum and threats of further tariffs on imported cars, Tusk Tusk said in a letter to the heads of government of the European Union that “unfortunately the divisions go beyond trade.”
“It is my belief that, while hoping for the best, we must be ready to prepare our Union for worst-case scenarios,” Tusk said.
