Democracy must not be taken as a right for granted, but it must be enhanced and defended every day, with all determination, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has stated on Friday at the Reception hosted by the US Embassy in Bucharest to mark the Independence Day.

We join our American friends and partners on the year of the modern Romania Centennial. Romania’s history (…) is constantly reminding us that democracy must not be taken as a right for granted. Maybe this is the biggest lesson that we should learn on the 100th balance sheet. Democracy must be enhanced and defended every day, with all determination, in Europe and in every corner of the world,” Iohannis stated.

He pointed out that unity and solidarity must be preserved on both sides of the Atlantic.

“The rough times that we are facing now also have the power to warn us over the need to preserve unity and solidarity between both sides of the Atlantic. The transatlantic relation is not important only for the joint security and prosperity of the EU and of the United States, but also for the essential set of democratic values of the Western community that we are part of, for, if the values that underlie our western societies are eroding, then the substance of the transatlantic itself is threatened,” the Romanian head of state said.

Klaus Iohannis added that he is a firm supporter of the idea that enhancing the transatlantic partnership remains vital for Romania.

“I am convinced that the Presidency of the EU Council, that Romania is taking over in six months, will represent a particular opportunity also for promoting and enhancing the transatlantic partnership, for which we all must act firmly and consistently. On the U.S. Independence Day, I want to assure our strategic partner that I am firmly committed to act so that our country should remain the same involved, responsible and stable actor, which is complying with its commitments (…) and which is enhancing its capacity to be a security provider and to design our common values in the region,” President Iohannis pointed out.

He added that stability, predictability and a strong, independent judiciary are needed.

But in order for this goal to be possible, next to others, we need stability, predictability, a strong, independent judiciary, a transparent, responsible ruling, that should really observe the rule of law. All these do not represent an option, but the only choice we can have for a strong, healthy Romania (…).”

President Klaus Iohannis thanked the USA for its constant support granted to Romania in this regard. “You will always find in Romania an ally, a partner and a friend that you can rely on,” he concluded.
