Some three quarters of the total inland freight transport in the EU in 2014 was transported by road, the remains are transported by rail or inland waterways.

According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, among Member States, Netherlands and Romania are the countries where the maritime freight transport had the most important shares in the EU, 46 percent and 29 percent.

At the same time, Luxembourg had the most freight transported by road per inhabitant (more than 15 500 tonne-kilometres per inhabitant) followed by Lithuania and Slovenia. On the other hand, freight transport by road was lowest in Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Romania (all less than 2 000 tonne-kilometres).

As regards the inland freight transport , it grew at a slower pace in the EU-28 than constant price gross domestic product (GDP) during the period from 2004–2014. Comparing with the situation in 2004, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Hungary recorded the greatest increases in inland freight transport relative to GDP, with their respective indices more than 40 percent higher in 2014 than 10 years earlier.

Airports in Germany dealt with 4.3 million tonnes of air freight in 2015, considerably more than in any other EU Member State. France and the United Kingdom had the second and third highest amounts of air freight, at 2.5 million and 2.4 million tonnes.
