Oprescu’s adviser arrested for his insistence to get money out of his alleged influence within the City Hall

Judges with the Bucharest Court on Tuesday presented the motivation behind the arrest of Solomon Wigler, Bucharest Mayor’s adviser. They claim that Sorin Oprescu’s adviser has stuck in the attempt of obtaining financial interests letting the others believe he has influence upon the employees of the Bucharest City Hall.

Solomon Wigler was placed under remand on June 4 in the file where he is charged with EUR 204,000 bribery. In exchange he would have promised to intervene for the issuing of building permits and some plans for urban development required for setting up three supermarkets.

The magistrates claim the remand custody was mandatory, being the only action capable of enabling the investigation, considering that Wigler made a practice of asking and receiving bribe. The judge dealing with this case also showed that the adviser’s behavior points reveals that he specialized in criminal activities which was representing illegal income.

Anti-corruption prosecutors justified their decision to place Wigler under remand that he would have asked bribe from a businessman, promising him he would touch Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu about the release of several construction authorizations. Yet, prosecutors haven’t found any incriminating evidence in the General Mayor’s office.

Solomon Wigler was recorded while asking or receiving bribery in his office from the 14th floor of the City Hall’s headquarters. He used to tell a businessman: “Did you bring something for them? Did you bring money or something else?”
