Law on combating food waste – adopted. Foodstuff close to expiration date will be donated

The Chamber of Deputies has passed on Tuesday a draft law that aims combating food waste by donating, by traders, of the food near to expiry date. The failure to comply can result in penalties of up to RON 10,000.

The legislative proposal stipulates that the food will be donated to foundations, NGOs, retirement homes, orphanages and hospitals, under a contract signed between traders and legal entities concerned.

The violation of this law would be punishable by fines of RON 1,000 to RON 10,000. The Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making body in this case.

Romania ranks ninth among the most wasteful countries in the EU, with a percentage of 2.55%, or 2.2 million tons of food lost each year, which means over 6,000 tonnes per day, gandul.info informs.
