The lawyer who defended Nicu Ceausescu in court has died. Paula Iacob had been collaborator of the former Securitate

Paula Iacob, one of the most famous lawyers in Romania, has died Tuesday evening at age of 83, announces Realitatea TV and Romania TV. The former lawyer was frequently present in TV studios. Paula Iacob gained fame when she defended in court Nicu Ceausescu, the son of Nicolae Ceausescu. She had been denunciator to the former Securitate and during her frequent TV appearances she criticized the fight against corruption and found reason to defend the corrupt people.
Paula Iacob suffered a stroke a month ago and was transported to the Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest. Doctors kept her under observation in intensive care, and then she was moved to Bagdasar hospital.
Paula Iacob was denunciator to the former Securitate (the former secret service in communism) under the code name ‘Gabriela’ and ‘Ioana’ and a sentence was issued in October 2011 by the Bucharest Court of Appeal in this regard. CNSAS said Paula Iacob was recruited by the Securitate, as initial informant, under the name ‘Gabriela’ in 1952, then she signed a new commitment under the name ‘Ioana’ in 1970.
CNSAS has submitted to the file her commitment, written notes signed by Paula Iacob, and notes of Securitate officers drawn on the basis of her statements. The information provided by Paula Iacob aimed the Romanian Diaspora in Germany and journalists from the ‘Radio Free Europe’.
