Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu needs EUR 50 M revamping works

The oldest museum in Central and Eastern Europe, Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu, urgently needs a thorough restoration, is the warning signal of the museum’s officials.

Professor Sabin Luca, director of the museum, once again asked for the authorities’ help in a press conference on Monday, explaining that he has been asking for help for nine years now and that the restoration program has been estimated at EUR 50 M seven years ago precisely by the specialists team that had restored the building of Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy.

The museum’s official reminded that it happened in the past that a 40 kilos stone dislocated, but fortunately it did not hurt any visitor or employee. He refers to a case few years ago when the arm of a very large statue, located in the museum’s interior yard, has fallen one night.

“We cannot start a restoration program for nine years, and it is not due to financial reasons but rather bureaucratic (…) We are now undergoing a wide process of redecorating (…) but we might not be able to enter the palace, as the risk of visitors being hit by stones would be high. No major intervention has been performed here in the past 240 years and that is visible,” Sabin Luca argued.

However, the museum paid from its own funds the restoration of the stone monuments whose parts were falling since 2006.

The last important works performed at Brukenthal dates before 2007, the year when Sibiu was the European Cultural Capital.
