National coal output fell by almost 8 pc in Q1

In the first quarter of 2016, Romania’s net coal output totaled 1.147 million tonnes of oil equivalent, down by 7.6 percent (94,500 toe) compared to Q1 of 2015, National Institute of Statistics (INS) data inform.

During the same period, Romania imported 121,300 toe of net coal, down by 22,700 toe (15.8 percent) compared to the quantity imported in the previous year.

According to the Energy Strategy of Romania 2015-2035 draft, published this February on the Ministry of Energy website, Romania has a concessioned exploitable reserve of pit coal of over 100 million tonnes, concentrated in a single deposit, with a degree of assurance for about 60 years.

As regards lignite, the concessioned exploitable reserve amounts to over 400 million tons, concentrated in a small area, with a degree of assurance for about 15 years, but with the possibility of extension depending on demand.
