Bucharest District 1 suspended mayor, Andrei Chiliman is investigated in a new file, being charged with helping a person to destroy some outbuildings of Știrbei Palace in Bucharest and also with illegally signing the demolition permit, thus jeopardizing a historical monument.

Andrei Chiliman was mayor at the District 1 Hall and now is prosecuted for abuse of office, according to the National Anti-corruption Directorate.

Anti-corruption prosecutors say that Chiliman helped a person to destroy historical monument constructions, outbuildings of Știrbei Palace (located downtown Bucharest) during April-December 2008. “The demolition action jeopardized the historical monument of Știrbei Palace and its underground relics, which were also destroyed,” reads the indictment.

Investigators claim that Chiliman signed the urban planning certificate and the demolition permit, knowing that District 1 Hall was not the authorized authority on this matter.

Andrei Chiliman was at DNA on Tuesday to be informed on these new charges.

Știrbei Palace was bought by businessman Ovidiu Popescu in 2005, following an investment mounting to about EUR 11m. The authorization process of the project started in 2008 and underwent several stages, according to palatal-stirbei.ro.

Andrei Chiliman is prosecuted for corruption deeds in another file, next to his personal adviser, Ioana Costescu, former Liberal treasurer Vlad Moisescu and local councilor Ion Brad. They are accused of assigning preferential construction works to some companies, receiving in exchange commissions of 10 percent out of the contract value.
