Gov’t decides to dissolve DIPI and replace it by DGPI. The new structure will be under parliamentary control

The government has decided on Wednesday to dissolve the Directorate for Intelligence and Internal Protection (DIPI) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and to set up the Directorate General for Internal Protection (DGPI), the new structure will be placed under parliamentary control.

Interior Minister Dragos Tudorache has stated that the establishment of DGPI has been a priority coming “from the realities which showed up in time, especially this year, regarding the functioning of this body.”

“The novelty is that we have a rule of law at primary level for the functioning of the internal protection structure of the ministry, non-existent until now. It was regulated only by some provisions in the MAI law. So basically we set up for the first time, a clear legal framework for the functioning of this structure,” Dragos Tudorache said after the government sitting.

Tudorache also said that the ordinance adopted on Wednesday clarifies the powers of this structure.

The Interior Minister explained that the Government issued the Emergency Ordinance for setting up this structure because lately DIPI “has lost much credibility both externally and internally”.

DGPI will carry out information-operative operations exclusively in the MAI field, which will ensure the delimitation from other structures involved in national security. By setting up the new structure DIPI is to be dissolved.
