The Director General of the National Uranium Company Ion Moraru has resigned on Tuesday after a meeting with Energy Minister Andrei Gerea. Moraru claims his resignation is not related to the discussions with the Minister and neither to the protests the miners are holding at Crucea mine. “The reasons are personal and unilateral,” said Moraru.

He said that he agreed with the Minister that, until the appointment of a new Director-General, he will continue to manage the company’s activity.

Political sources claim that for the position of Director General with the National Uranium Company could be named Constantin Harasim, former under-Prefect of Suceava County, former National Liberal Party member and now supporter of the Liberal Reforming Party.

About two hundred miners with the uranium exploitation in Crucea were self-trapped underground since Monday and were threatening to go on a hunger strike if their claims are not met.

Miners claimed they were expecting their requests to be solved, so that the minister observes the protocol signed jointly with them on January 30 providing a new basis for their salaries. They threatened that otherwise the protest will radicalise and they will go on hunger strike, intending to take with them, underground, their wives or children.

Energy Minister Andrei Gerea said on Tuesday ministry’s representatives have proposed to the miners a salary increase of RON 300 per month until the budget rectification, calling on them to abandon the protest.

“I hope that the miners trapped underground understand that we are making absolutely every effort to increase their revenues, we understand very well the situation in which they and their families are and I agree that their income is well below what it should be and therefore we will make all legal efforts to meet their demands, but there’s no way this solution comes immediately,” Gerea said. The Minister called on the protesters to accept the proposed revenue growth, which is “close to variant of the protocol” for a few months until the budget rectification.
