Weather Alert: Torrential Rain and Storms in Multiple Counties

On Wednesday, meteorologists issued a code yellow alert for heavy rain and storms effective until 11:00 p.m. in various regions of the country. Rain is also expected in Bucharest later in the evening.

The yellow code warning of temporarily increased atmospheric instability is in effect on Wednesday, until 11:00 p.m.

According to meteorologists, during this interval there will be periods of torrential downpours, frequent thunderstorms, hail, intense wind gusts and storms in Oltenia, northwestern Muntenia, western and southwestern Transylvania, as well as in the Western and Southern Carpathians. In short periods of time or through accumulation, the amounts of water will be 20…25 l/sq m and isolated over 40 l/sq m, says the National Meteorology Administration.

Rainfall also forecast in Bucharest

On Wednesday, temperatures in the capital will decrease, hovering around the multi-year averages, as per the special forecast. Expect mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon and evening, with possible showers accompanied by lightning and brief wind intensification. The maximum temperature in Bucharest will reach 21-23 degrees.

Flooding danger as well

Hydrologists have issued a code yellow flood code for rivers in several hydrographic basins, until Thursday morning at 08:00.

“Considering the current hydrometeorological situation and the weather forecast for the next 24 hours, the I.N.H.G.A. specialists they instituted the Yellow Code starting today, May 8, from 12:00 p.m. until tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.”, hydrologists announced.

According to them, certain sectors of rivers from the hydrographic basins will be affected: Someşul Mic (counties: Bihor and Cluj), Someş (counties: Cluj, Sălaj and Maramureş), Crasna (counties: Sălaj and Satu Mare), Crișul Repede (counties: Cluj and Bihor), Crișul Negru (Bihor county), Crișul Alb (counties: Hunedoara and Arad), Aries (counties: Alba and Cluj), Mureş (counties: Alba, Cluj, Sibiu and Hunedoara), Timiş (county Caraş Severin) , Bârzava, Nera (Caraş Severin county), Cerna (counties: Gorj and Caraş Severin), Danube (counties: Dolj, Mehedinti and Caraş Severin), Desnătui (counties: Mehedinti and Dolj), Jiu, Gilort (Gorj county), Motru (counties: Gorj and Mehedinţi), Jiu (counties: Mehedinţi and Dolj), Olt (counties: Sibiu, Vâlcea and Argeş), Olteţ (counties: Gorj and Vâlcea), Argeş, Dâmboviţa (counties: Argeş and Dâmboviţa), Ialomiţa ( counties: Dâmboviţa and Prahova) and Prahova (Prahova county).
