Debrecen Flower Festival stops by Romania, too

An exquisite carnival in Europe displaying floats adorned with millions of flowers comes from Debrecen to Romania in Oradea.

Inhabitants from Debrecen in Hungary will build 16 eight-meter long flower platforms that will parade across the city on August 20 within the Flower Carnival. Usually, 1,000 hours of work are needed just to cover one float with hundreds of thousands of flowers.

A special float bearing the symbols of Debrecen and Oradea will be also designed, as the carnival will arrive in Oradea on August 21.

This year, the carnival will invite guests to taste flower food. “We know from the cuisine magazines that there are one or two flowers used in gastronomy; we thought we can pick them up and give them to some chefs to make not only decorations but also dishes,” Edith Bodor, the festival’s organizer told Digi 24.

Debrecen organizes the Flower Carnival since 1966 which by today has grown into one of the most popular festivals not only of the city but of Hungary as well. The internationally acknowledged Flower Carnival is held on 20 August every year, a national holiday when Hungarians celebrate the foundation of the Hungarian State.

The festival came to the 46^th edition, while preparations cost almost EUR 400,000 this year.
