Mirea Basescu, the brother of former President Traian Basescu, is to serve his sentence in prison, the Constanta Court has decided on Wednesday, after upholding the national Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) appeal to the Medgidia Court decision to release his on parole. The ruling is final. Mircea Basescu is to serve his sentence at Poarta Alba penitentiary, antena3.ro reports.
Mircea Basescu’s appeal pointed to his age and the remand period. Mircea Basescu has filed a request for parole to the Medgidia Court last month, about three months after being sentenced.
He has served one third of the 4-year sentence for influence peddling in the file he is charged with receiving EUR 600,000 as bribe from Sandu Anghel’s family. He has spent only four months behind bars.
On June 16 the Constanţa Court of Appeal upheld the verdict of the Court convicting Mircea Basescu to four years imprisonment for influence peddling.
