European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu, has announced on Tuesday the approval of EUR 59 million for the river transportation in Romania, for the modernisation of the sluice-gates on the canals Danube-Black Sea and Midia Năvodari-Poarta Albă.

“EUR 59 million out of the Cohesion Fund will be invested in the modernisation of the sluice-gates on the canals Danube-Black Sea and Midia Navodari-Poarta Alba. The latter provides the connection of Constanta Port, at the Black Sea, with the Danube in the south-eastern region of Romania. The works will allow higher river traffic by 50%, concomitantly with the improvement of the safety of navigation and the increase of the protection level of the adjacent transport network, section connecting the Rhine and Danube rivers. The works will be completed in 2021,” Corina Cretu said, according to capital.ro.

The commissioner added that the project will allow better exploitation of the huge potential the river traffic has in terms of trade exchanges. “It will bring benefits to the economy of the entire south-eastern region of Romania and, on a broader plan, of the Danube Macro-region,” Corina Cretu said.
