NATO said on Wednesday that its procurement division is to support a group of member countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain, on a contract to buy up to 1,000 Patriot air defense missiles, Reuters reports.

The agency awarded a production and delivery contract to COMLOG, a joint venture between Raytheon and MBDA, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization announced in a statement, adding that European missile production will be expanded.

Consolidated multinational procurement in the spirit of the European Air Shield Initiative (ESSI) provides economies of scale and supports the expansion of the production capacity of the new GEM-T missiles to meet the growing demand,” NATO said in a statement.
