Director of Targu Jiu penitentiary, accused of bribe taking from a convict’s concubine

The Federation of Trade Unions with the National Administration of Penitentiaries (FSANP) has called for an investigation at the Targu Jiu Penitentiary on Tuesday, accusing Director Ion Popescu of corruption crimes for favouring a detainee.

Commissary Ion Popescu is charged by trade unionists that, as Director, he has requested and received benefits, several times, from a concubine of a detainee, in exchange for some favours granted to the latter, consisting of intimate visits, rewards and, implicitly, early conditional release.

“Under the appearance of so-called sponsorships, the director of the penitentiary requested medicines, materials and equipment that she handed over to director Ion Popescu, but without being certified by the registration in the penitentiary,” FSANP informs.

According to the local press, reportedly the detainee is Sandel Alexandrescu, a former pharmacy owner in Arges and husband of the Public Health Directorate (DSP) Arges director at that time. The Supreme Court sentenced him to five years in prison, in a file of fraud.

The director, the prisoner and his girlfriend are allegedly guilty of taking bribes and respectively giving bribe and influence peddling. The unionists claim that Ion Popescu is not at the first offence, in 2014 he was investigated for similar deeds in favour of Ionel Mantog, former State Secretary with the Economy Ministry.
